🚨🚨Senior Spotlight🚨🚨 Now is the time to adopt or work with a rescue to foster this gal. Golden years should not be spent in a shelter! #Repost @susiesseniordogs with @get_repost・・・(near) RALEIGH, NC: Mary is an older gal who was found as a stray in small, rural town. She was malnourished, had worms, and was suffering from a fresh wound. Wherever Mary escaped from (or possibly intentionally let go), it was clearly not a healthy environment. Mary has since healed up at the shelter. But it's a small shelter with limited space and not a place she can or should linger. Mary is heartworm positive and her adoption comes with heartworm treatment. Heartworm is treatable but she needs to be in a proper home in order to do so! #WhyIfoster Apache (formerly Strip) was an owner-surrender to Wake County Animal Shelter nearly 3 weeks ago, as the owner could not afford to care for him. Apache was absolutely terrified and totally shut down, so he was made "Rescue Only" and could not be adopted from the floor. In his kennel, Apache curled up tight on his bed and shook... for 7 days straight. He wouldn't get up to get food or treats from the shelter staff, and when taken outside, he would find a corner to sit and shake in. He was fearful of people, and hardly even reacted when other dogs were out in the play yard- including the dog he was surrendered with, a dog he had lived with in a home for years. Apache was so shut down, he was scared to use the bathroom for a several days straight. Wake County staff and volunteers continued to work with him and advocated for him, but finally his "FHD" (Final Hold Date) hit. A first-time foster saw his picture and couldn't resist going to meet him. We met Apache hours before his FHD expired, meaning we met him hours before he was scheduled to be euthanized. He was terrified when we met him, and the foster wasn't sure she would be able to get through to him. She decided to give him a chance, and picked him up that afternoon as the shelter was closing.Within 1 hour, he was sitting more confidently. Within one night, he was eating hard food and sleeping on the couch. Within one full day, he was approaching his foster for pets and cuddling/kissing her. Within a week, he is a completely different dog- he loves walking, cuddling his foster, and warms up to strangers (men and women) quickly when he meets them.Because a foster was willing to give this guy a chance, he escaped his FHD, and now has a warm bed, a caring foster mom, and most importantly a chance at his happy tail. Dogs in the shelter are often overwhelmed and terrified. They are not broken- they just need someone to give them a chance. If you've ever considered fostering, now is the time! Shelters are very full and fosters are always in need. More info on fostering online here: https://www.freedom-ride.org/fostering/ ... See MoreSee Less

Everyone should do before and after photos like this, it shows so many feelings and emotions. Love this, thank you for everyone involved helping this baby..

My husband & I picked a little chi in Texas. He was so broken almost unresponsive. We've had him 7 yrs. He is still traumetized but we try to hold & love him. In return he runs at us & gives us kisses. We love him dearly.

Reach out to Freedom Ride Rescue if you can help!
Reach out to Freedom Ride Rescue for more on this girl!
💔😔
Left Eye Lucy Loo

My inspiration for starting Black Dog Brigade.

4 years ago today I drove to Rowan County Animal Shelter and pulled her with only a couple hours to spare before she was to be euthanized. She walked out of the kennel and gave me the sweetest little kiss that to me said thank you for saving me.

Miss this girl every day! She loved us with the heart of a 1,000 dogs and was so grateful always for even the small things.

Rowan County Animal Shelter is an underfunded rural shelter with many great dogs; just like many other shelters in NC. Please don’t overlook dogs like Lucy. They just need some TLC and a safe place to be.

We had Lucy for only a short time (almost 3 years), however she made a huge imprint on my heart and soul and I try to honor her memory every day with Black Dog Brigade.
